Hands-on gardeners and residential home owners are often at a loss as to how to achieve good design. They may know it when they see it, but when it comes to designing an inspirational, yet practical, vision for their own home garden, they could use some help. Designers come in many forms; landscapers, landscape architects, landscape designers, garden designers; even those who install decks and interlock stone utilize design elements. In many situations these professionals supply what's needed though it usually helps to have deep pockets.
Landscape and garden designer Janette Higgins' approach is somewhat different. She offers on-site landscape design consultations targeted to the unique needs of the budget-oriented, design-challenged do-it-yourself gardener in Ontario communities ranging from Peterborough to Toronto as well as closer to her Port Hope home in Northumblerland County such as Cobourg, Newcastle and Bowmanville. And it doesn't hurt to enquire about other locations -- she's done consultations in eastern, southwestern and northern (well the near north!) Ontario.
Janette's Garden in Spring
"As a landscape designer, my goal is to give you a focused vision for your outdoor space and the practical steps you can take to achieve it. A consultation usually takes between three and four hours. It doesn't matter if you're a novice or more experienced. I tackle issues ranging from materials to colour schemes, from pruning to border shapes, and from decor to garden structures. I've helped everyone from those faced with a blank slate, as in a new home, to those who wish to fine-tune an already showcase garden. I also offer designer ideas for everything from the most formal garden to the most casual. Whether it takes one, five, even ten, years to turn my landscape ideas into reality, they will be practical, understandable, cost-effective and specific to your landscaping situation. Most can be accomplished by do-it-yourself gardeners, but I'll let you know which other garden designers and landscape professionals could help."
A Distinction: Garden designers deal primarily in the arrangement of plant materials such as annuals, perennials, shrubs and trees. Landscape designers, on the other hand, focus on the structure of the garden which includes hardscape such as terraces, decks, outbuildings, driveways etc. as well as shapes of beds/gardens and specifications for larger plant material such as trees, shrubs and ground covers.
Landscape Designer Janette Higgins lives and gardens in Port Hope, Ontario, Canada and has been inspiring do-it-yourself gardeners achieve good design for many years. Janette's own Port Hope garden evolved over 10 years. In 1993, she established Gardens Past, a specialty garden shop in nearby Cobourg. She sold it in 2003 to concentrate on her landscape designer services.
